Holy Monday Devotion: The Lesson of the Fig Tree

Matthew 21:18–22

As Jesus returned to the city early in the morning, He was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, He approached it expecting fruit. But though it was full of leaves, it had none. In response, Jesus said, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately, the tree withered.

The fig tree appeared healthy on the outside—full of leaves, giving the impression of life and fruitfulness. Yet in reality, it was barren. Jesus used this as a living lesson to remind His disciples—and us—that God desires more than outward appearance. He is looking for genuine fruit in our lives.

As believers, especially during this holy season, we are called to examine our hearts. Are we simply displaying the “leaves” of Christianity—attending church, speaking the right words, and maintaining appearances ? Or are we truly bearing fruit—love, faith, obedience, humility, and righteousness?

Jesus goes on to teach about faith. He says that if we truly believe and do not doubt, we can even command mountains to move. This reminds us that a fruitful life is rooted in faith—real, unwavering trust in God.

Reflection for Today:
Holy Monday calls us to honest self-examination. Let us not be like the fig tree—appearing fruitful but lacking substance. Instead, may our lives produce fruit that honors God.

Prayer:
Lord, search our hearts today. Remove anything that is not pleasing to You. Help us to bear true fruit in our lives. Strengthen our faith so that we may live in obedience and reflect Your love to the world. Amen.
